Should you Move or should you Improve - Understanding what is best for Homeowner

News at Kerr & Co | 25/04/2022

Easter and the Spring Market, a traditional nesting time, and the busiest time of year for Estate Agents. Looking back over the last few years, we have experienced a remarkable period in the property industry. Brexit, the end of the stamp duty holiday, the COVID pandemic and the shortage of stock has made this Spring the busiest in my career as an estate agent which spans over 30 years.

These unprecedented factors has produced a sellers’ market with competition for family houses at a premium. As a result many local families have asked if staying and extending rather than moving would be better option. Our advice continues to be if your settled in an area and have established roots and connections this may be the most logical solution. Obviously there are costs to consider and advantages and disadvantages of both.

In the immortal words of Kirsty Alsop and Phil Spencer's 'Love it or List it’ TV programme, moving home can throw up all sorts of decisions and emotions which homeowners many need advice.

Kirstie Allsopp is a keen advocate of knocking down a wall or two, however both she and Phil are adamant that you should neither go over budget or invest more than you will gain post renovation. With the cost of building materials and labour at a premium setting a budget and sticking to it is key.

With our knowledge of Shepherds bush and Hammersmith, loft conversions, side or rear extensions, garden rooms and full redecoration of a property are projects most likely to add the greatest value to your home. On average these could add between 8% and 25% to the value of your home. This is depending which street and type of property you live in. We have the great fortune of being one of the most established agents in the area and have extensive knowledge of what improvements home buyers are looking for and the value that it may add.

If you have any questions or need a conversation on anything we have covered please give me or one of my sales team on

Yours sincerely
