What's On Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush  -  August Bank Holiday

History and Origins of our August Bank Holiday

Its the bank holiday before Christmas - August Bank Holiday will fall on the 26th of August in 2024 and with the sunny weather very much lingering into September there is lots to enjoy .

This history of the bank holiday was introduced the by the banking system as the banks closed on these days, postponing any financial dealings until the next day.   This was especially so when Britain was largely an agricultural economy and life revolved very much around farming, village life, and the changing seasons. People celebrated the natural cycle of life such as the end of winter, the coming of summer, the summer solstice, and harvests.  Livelihoods depended on the seasons and the prospect of a poor harvest, floods, long winters, or wet summers was disastrous for the economy .  Significant dates in the farming diary became important and a customary way to celebrate them especially if there was a bumper year and a surplus to enjoy

The bank holidays we know and love today were introduced by banker and politician John Lubbock, the first Baron of Avebury, Lubbock who drafted the Bank Holidays Bill in 1871, when the first official bank holidays in England, Wales and Ireland were Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day became offically under law. Scotland had New Year’s Day, Good Friday, the first Monday in May, the first Monday in August, and Christmas Day.  In UK the August bank holiday was then moved as it clashed with many factory shut downs over the summer and was then moved to the last Monday in August .

So enjoy the last of the summer vibes and sunshine with a few of our reccomendations for the long bank holiday weekend ahead  !
